Hayden Quinn's Coastal Road Trip

Chef & keen adventurer Hayden Quinn, his wife Jax, and their cute pup Peanut love a relaxed road trip, and their recent roadie in the comfort of an Apollo motorhome was one worth sharing!

Hayden, Jax & Peanut spent a few blissful days exploring the south coast of New South Wales - soaking up the sun and cooking up a storm along the way. While in the camper, Hayden whipped up an easy and delicious curry, sharing how simple it is to make great tasting food on the road - proving that cooking in a camper doesn't need to be boring or basic!

Hayden's Campervan Curry Recipe -

Ingredients -
● 1 tbs neutral oil
● 1 x small brown onion, diced
● 4 x cloves garlic, crushed and chopped
● 3 x sprigs curry leaf, leaves only
● 2 tbs curry powder (I used Love my Earth Fish Masala)
● 1 tbs brown mustard seeds
● Sea salt, to taste
● 1 (400ml) can coconut milk
● 400g peel green prawns
● White rice, cooked to your liking
● Coriander, to garnish

Method
Step 1. Heat a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat. Add oil and onion, cook for 2-3mins until onion begins to soften. Next add garlic and curry leaf, stir well to
combine. Once fragrant, add curry powder and mustard seeds, and toast for a further 1-2mins.
Step 2. Add coconut milk and stir, incorporating all the curry powder and spices into the mix, the coconut milk should change colour and bring to a gentle simmer. Add
prawns and cook until done to your liking. *Note, you may need to add a little water to the mix if it becomes too thick.
Step 3. Serve curry over rice and garnish with coriander. Enjoy!

Why take a family camping holiday in Auckland

Auckland may be New Zealand's largest urban area, but it's also a city of contrasts, where secluded natural escapes are just minutes from shops, cafes, and the bustling urban vibe. It's this unique blend that makes Auckland an ideal spot for a family camping holiday. The city's landscape is peppered with Auckland campsites free from the noise of city life, offering families a peaceful retreat amidst nature's beauty.

Best of all, Auckland has something on offer for families with kids of all ages. Engage the little ones with a visit to the interactive museums or let them run free in one of the many lush parks. Teens will love the vibrant art scene, trendy cafes, and the latest tech on display at innovative galleries. And for the whole family, Auckland's numerous beaches and regional parks provide a perfect backdrop for making memories, whether it's building sandcastles, exploring native bush, or simply relaxing to the sound of waves and birdsong.

What's more, the convenience of Auckland holiday parks means you're never too far from the city centre. You can enjoy a day soaking up the sun and surf at a beachside campsite, and then find yourself enjoying the cosmopolitan buzz of Auckland's city centre after just a short drive. This seamless blend of relaxation and adventure makes Auckland a top choice for families looking to explore the best of both worlds.

What’s the best way to explore Auckland and its surrounds?

Exploring Auckland, whether it's your first visit or you're rediscovering your local area, becomes an adventure of its own when you choose to travel by campervan.

With an Apollo campervan, the journey itself becomes part of the destination, inviting you to uncover hidden gems and scenic spots at your own pace.

Apollo campervans are designed with your comfort and convenience in mind, featuring spacious interiors and comfortable sleeping arrangements that make every moment on the road comfortable and enjoyable.

The beauty of travelling by campervan is the freedom it affords, especially for families. There's no need to worry about the day's adventures being cut short because the little ones are tired; their comfy bed is just a few steps away, ready whenever they need it. And when it's time for a meal, your very own kitchen awaits in your campervan, ready to serve up your family's favourite dishes. This level of convenience and flexibility is what makes campervan travel with Apollo the ideal choice for families looking to explore Auckland and beyond.

Our top family-friendly holiday park picks in Auckland

We've picked out a few of the best Auckland campsites and holiday parks that offer comfort, fun, and convenience for the whole family.

Ambury Campground

Located in the suburb of Māngere Bridge, Ambury Campground offers a uniquely rural camping experience right on the doorstep of Auckland's vibrant city life. Set within the expansive Ambury Regional Park, this spot is one of the most popular Auckland council campsites for families.

The campground provides hardstands for campervans, so setting up is quick and easy. You’ll also find essential facilities such as toilets and accessible drinking water.

The campground's location in a working farm environment is a real draw for families. It offers children the chance to see farm operations up close and learn about animals in a natural setting. While traditional playgrounds and pools might not feature here, the park itself is a natural playground, with opportunities for walking, bird watching, and exploring the volcanic features of the region.

Ōrewa Beach Holiday Park

Situated along the stunning beachfront of Ōrewa, just 30 minutes north of Auckland, the Ōrewa Beach Holiday Park offers a picturesque setting for families travelling by campervan. The township of Ōrewa is known for its relaxed holiday vibe and cool beachfront promenade, perfect for leisurely walks and bike rides.

This holiday park is perfectly positioned to provide both the relaxation of a beachside getaway and the convenience of close proximity to Auckland's attractions. The park boasts an adventure playground and a basketball pad, providing ample opportunities for kids to play and stay active. The safe, surf club-patrolled beaches adjacent to the park offer peace of mind for parents and fun for children, making it an ideal spot for swimming and beach activities.

Takapuna Beach Holiday Park

Right in the heart of Takapuna on Auckland’s North Shore, Takapuna Beach Holiday Park is where the city's buzz meets the calm of the beach. It's a laid-back base for your Auckland adventures, offering the best of both worlds – sandy toes by day and Takapuna's lively scene by night.

The beach is your backyard here, perfect for paddling, building sandcastles, or just chilling with a book while the kids make a beeline for the playground. And when it's time to switch things up, Takapuna's bustling centre, with its cool cafes, shops, and eateries, is just a short walk away. Fancy catching a show? The Bruce Mason Centre's got you covered, and it's all within easy reach.

Tāwharanui campground

Around 90 minutes drive from central Auckland, Tāwharanui Campground is a real gem for campervan families looking to soak up some nature. This spot is all about getting back to basics and enjoying the great outdoors, with the campground set against a backdrop of stunning beaches and native bush.

For families camping with kids, this place is a bit of a playground. You've got the beach on your doorstep for swims and sandcastle building sessions, and the open sanctuary means you're likely to spot some of New Zealand's native birds up close.

What's cool about Tāwharanui is its location. You're tucked away in nature, but if you fancy a day trip, the Matakana region is just a short drive away. Think farmers markets, boutique cinemas, and chilled cafes. Plus, there's the Goat Island Marine Reserve nearby for a spot of snorkelling or glass-bottom boat tours.

Poukaraka Flats Campground (Waiheke Island)

Heading over to Waiheke Island, you'll find the chill vibes of Poukaraka Flats Campground nestled in Whakanewha Regional Park. It's a spot that makes you feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle, yet it's just a Sealink Ferry ride away from Auckland.

This campground is a family favourite for its easy-going atmosphere and kid-friendly beach. It's all about simple pleasures here – think picnics on the beach, exploring the park, and just soaking up the island life.

Waiheke Island itself is a slice of paradise with a laid-back vibe that's contagious. From zip-lining adventures that get your heart racing to quaint wineries where the kids can play while you sip on some local vino, there's something for the whole family.

Red Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park (Greater Auckland)

Located on the stunning Hibiscus Coast, just 35 minutes north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge, Red Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park offers the perfect mix of coastal charm and easy access to Auckland's sights.

Families love it here for the park's own private beach, just 100 metres away, offering safe swimming and top-notch fishing. But there's more to this spot than just beach lounging. You're at the base of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, which means you're perfectly placed to explore local gems like the Shakespear Regional Park with its walking trails and stunning views.

Whangateau Holiday Park

Over in the Matakana Coast area, just east of Warkworth and near Leigh, you'll find the chill vibes of Whangateau Holiday Park. It's the kind of place that's all about kicking back by the water, with the park perched right on the edge of Whangateau Harbour. For campervan families, it's a dream spot, offering a mix of waterfront and standard sites that are all about maximising those laid-back holiday feels.

This holiday park’s location is top-notch, nestled in one of North Auckland's most scenic recreational regions. While the park itself keeps things simple, focusing on the natural beauty and tranquillity of its waterfront setting, the cleanliness and quality of the facilities here get a big thumbs up from visitors.

And when it comes to things to do, you're spoiled for choice. A top pick is the Reptile Park at Ti Point. Kids of all ages will get a thrill from seeing exotic reptiles, alligators, tuatara, and tarantulas up close!

Piha Domain Motor Camp

Tucked away at the foot of the Waitakere Ranges, just a 50-minute drive from Auckland's central city, Piha Domain Motor Camp is your gateway to one of Auckland's most iconic west coast beaches. For campervan families looking for a mix of adventure and relaxation, this spot is a real find.

This popular campsite is right in the heart of Piha, known for its dramatic black sand beaches, surf-ready waves, and stunning natural scenery. The camp itself keeps things simple, focusing on the natural beauty and tranquillity of its setting, making it a perfect base for families wanting to explore the great outdoors.

Nearby, you've got the famous Lion Rock, a natural landmark that's perfect for some family photos. For those who love a good walk, there are plenty of bushwalking tracks through the ranges, offering breathtaking views and the chance to explore Auckland's unique native bush. And be sure to check out the nearby Kitekite Falls, where you can take a dip in the refreshing pools at the base of the waterfall.

Te Haruhi Bay campground at Shakespear Regional Park

Heading out to Shakespear Regional Park, you'll find the laid-back Te Haruhi Bay Campground, a spot that's all about grassy spaces, golden sand, and a whole lot of outdoor fun. Tucked away at the eastern end of Te Haruhi Bay, this campground is a family-friendly base with the beach just a short walk away.

The campground's flat, grassy areas are perfect for campervans, and the surrounding native plants give you a bit of privacy while still keeping that open, communal vibe. Plus, being in a pest-free sanctuary means you're likely to spot some of New Zealand's wildlife right from your campsite. You’ll also find walking trails that offer stunning views, secluded bays perfect for a quiet swim, and plenty of open spaces for the kids to run wild.

Cliff Top campground at Ōmana Regional Park

Perched in Ōmana Regional Park, just beside the beachside suburb of Maraetai, the Cliff Top Campground offers campervan families a grassy retreat with a view. This popular Auckland council campsite is all about the easy-going outdoor life, with rows of tall trees framing your stay and the beach just a stroll away.

Campervan travel tips for families

Hitting the road with your family in a campervan offers the adventure of a lifetime. It's a chance to bond, explore, and create unforgettable memories. To ensure your journey is as smooth and enjoyable as possible, here are some essential tips for travelling with children in a campervan:

  1. Pack smart: Space is at a premium in a campervan, so pack wisely. Opt for versatile clothing and collapsible items that save space.

  2. Plan your stops: Kids need to stretch their legs and burn off energy. Plan regular stops at interesting spots like playgrounds, beaches, or parks.

  3. Involve the kids: Get the children involved in planning the trip. Let them pick some activities or destinations so they feel included and excited about the adventure.

  4. Snack attack: Keep a stash of healthy snacks and water within easy reach to fend off hunger and stay hydrated, especially on long drives.

  5. Entertainment on the go: Pack books, games, and download movies or apps to keep the kids entertained during long stretches on the road.

  6. Flexible itinerary: Be prepared to adapt your plans. With kids, unexpected detours and changes are part of the adventure.

  7. Routine matters: Try to maintain a routine, especially for younger children. Regular meal times and bedtimes can help prevent kids from becoming overtired and grumpy. Don't forget comfort items for the kids, like their favourite blanket or toy.

  8. Embrace the experience: Things might not always go as planned, and that's okay. Embrace the unexpected and enjoy the unique experiences that come with campervan travel.
