Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
We've thought of everything so you don't have to! This also means you can pack light. You'll find many everyday essentials supplied in your camper; from bedding and linen to kitchen and cooking gear as well as general living equipment like dustpan and brush, clothesline and pegs and heaps more!
Yes, there are 240V power sockets inside your campervan. Please note that these will only operate when the vehicle has been connected to an external power source like at a holiday park. Because the vehicle has a larger earth pin, you will not be able to plug into a domestic power outlet.
Please note, the Britz Warrior 4WD and Apollo Overland Camper 4WD only feature a 12V house battery and cannot be connected to 240V power.
Unfortunately, our campervans and motorhomes are not equipped with wheelchair access. Additionally, the interior space is quite limited, and therefore does not accommodate a wheelchair.
Unfortunately not. We do not allow generators to be used with our vehicles.
Unfortunately, we do not provide any food or drink with your campervan. After you've picked up your camper, we recommend you head to the closest supermarket (you can search for this in the thl Roadtrip App) and stock up on your groceries then, once you've seen the camper and have assessed the cupboard storage and fridge size available to you.
Not at all!
We supply sheets, pillows with pillow cases, duvet and duvet cover (or comforter) for each bed, as well as bath towels. Additional bedding can be hired at the pick-up branch.
In Britz Warrior and Apollo Overland 4WDs in Australia we supply sleeping bags (instead of the duvet), along with the rest of the linen.
If you are travelling in a Britz, Apollo or Mighty campervan you can bring up to two well-behaved, registered dogs or cats on holiday. A pet service fee will apply.
Pets must have been treated for fleas and be controllable. We recommend that you plan ahead, checking that dogs are permitted at your intended destinations and campgrounds in advance. At pick-up and drop-off, we appreciate you ensuring that your pet is secure on a lead and is supervised by an adult outside of our branch.
Please check that your furry friends are clean and dry before entering the campervan and don't leave your pet unattended in the vehicle. While travelling, you must safely restrain your pets in the rear of the vehicle, avoiding the possibility of distracting the driver.
Please note that costs arising from damage and soiling caused by pets is not covered by the liability reduction option. These costs are the responsibility of the hirer.
If you are travelling in a maui motorhome animals are not permitted, with the exception of registered guide dogs, and permission needs to be arranged prior to rental. If an animal is allowed in your campervan additional fees may be applied to deep clean the interior.
No, our New Zealand campers do not feature house air-conditioning. They do have air-conditioning in the driver's cab.
Yes, there is air-conditioning in the driver's cab of all campers.
The larger 2WD campers with toilet and shower also include reverse cycle air-conditioning in the living area. This requires connection to 240V mains power at a campsite to operate.
There needs to be a minimum of 11.5 volts on your auxiliary [house] battery for ignition and more than a quarter tank of diesel in your fuel tank. Turn the dial to full for 5 minutes before resetting to a moderate temperature. Generally, it will take 1 litre of diesel to heat your motorhome for 4 hours, to a moderate temperature.
You can watch our CamperHelp How To video on Diesel Heating in the thl Roadtrip App in the On The Road section. If you have any problems please contact our On Road Assist team on phone 0800 788 558 (you will need a local sim to be able to contact us on this number) or +64 9 801 3857.
Gas bottle sizes and gas operated equipment differs with different campervans. Campervans with gas operated cooking, heating and water systems will use gas quicker than campervans with only gas cooking.
If you run out of gas, you can refill the LPG bottle at many outdoor camping stores. Alternatively, if in NZ you can use the Swap 'n' Go service at many service stations. You can search for the closest LPG Bottle Filling or Swapping station in the thl Roadtrip App.
If you have Pre Purchased Gas or the Re-Fuelling Pack then you don't need to return your campervan with a full gas bottle.
We provide one bath towel per person. All campers also come with a tea towel as part of the kitchen general living equipment.
No. There are only 6 seat belts fitted in a six berth. Each person, including babies and children, by law, must have their own seatbelt. Children need to be restrained in an approved child or booster seat. For more information on where children in child restraints sit, please visit the website.
No. Homes in Australia and New Zealand feature 10amp power sockets. Our campervans and motorhomes feature 15amp power connection in Australia, which has a larger earth pin at the bottom and cannot be plugged in to a 10amp socket. New Zealand campers feature 16amp power plugs. Campgrounds and Holiday Parks all have the appropriate power connection, so you need to book a campsite to plug into power there.
Vehicles under 4.5 tonne gross vehicle mass are legally required to have at least 1.5mm of tread remaining in all the principal grooves (i.e. the wide main grooves in the centre part of the tread).
These grooves have tread wear indicators in them and the tyre should not be worn so much that the tread wear indicators contact the road.
Our company minimum allowed tread depth is 3mm at pick-up; double the legal limit.
Other countries have very similar minimum tread depth requirements. 1.5mm or 1.6mm is well accepted globally as the minimum allowable tread depth for passenger and van tyres.
The speed of the 12 volt battery drainage will depend on the climate and how often it is used. The 12V house battery supplies power to the fridge, house lights, water pump, water heater, stove ignition for electric hobs and USB ports, if fitted. It also supplies power to the LCD screen, DVD player, rangehood and toilet flush system for campers that have them.
Some of our vehicles have solar panel backup, which helps restore the living area battery when parked, but can't keep up if everything is operating.
Although the house battery receives a trickle charge while driving, it is not sufficient to fully charge it. It is important that you book into a campground on your first night so you can plug into 240 volt power to fully charge your house battery. Then plug into a 240 volt campsite every two or so nights, for around 14 to 16 hours to fully charge the house battery and avoid it getting too low. Remember, the harder your battery works, the quicker it will drain. So, turn off any appliances you aren't using (but keep the fridge switched on at all times).
The house battery is a deep cycle battery, separate to the vehicle engine battery. So, if you flatten the battery completely in the living area it will not affect the driving battery, however you will need to plug the vehicle into 240V mains power for the battery to fully recharge.
When the 12V auxiliary (house) battery has a healthy charge [11-14V] the following equipment will operate:
- fridge
- house lights
- water pumphouse
- radio/stereo if fitted
- toilet flush
- rangehood
- house USB ports
along with the ignition for the water heater, diesel heater and electric hob for campers where fitted.
The following require a 240V power connection to operate:
- electric toaster
- microwave
- 240V electric sockets
- reverse cycle air conditioner for campers in Australia that feature it
All vehicles have storage compartments; be it overhead cupboards, under seat storage or external lockers. We suggest that you travel with soft bags instead of suitcases as they fit better into the storage compartments. There is no room to store large hard cases.
The vehicles are equipped with AU/NZ electrical sockets, so if you are coming from overseas you will need an adaptor. Plug adaptors may be purchased at the airport terminal or from some branches. If your camper features Android Auto or Apple CarPlay you will need to bring your own cable to connect your phone to this in the cab.
No, our campers do not feature televisions. However, some campers are fitted with an entertainment screen. This is a media player only and doesn't have access to television signal but it's great for watching DVDs or movies from your USB.
Yes, however you will need to be connected to a 240V power supply and simply use a power socket in the vehicle. The driver's cab in most campers also features USB or USB-C input to plug in devices whilst driving; drawing from the 12V engine battery. Be sure not to leave devices charging when parked up or it will drain the engine battery.
None of our campers is Australia feature bike racks. In New Zealand all maui motorhomes feature a bike rack included. A bike rack can be hired for the following campers in New Zealand: Apollo: Euro Plus, Euro Quest, Euro Camper, Euro Deluxe; Mighty: Deuce Plus, Double Up, Big Six. Bike racks must be pre-booked. Maximum 2 bikes per vehicle. E-bikes are not permitted.
Emptying the toilet cassette is very quick and easy to do. We have a 'how to' video available to watch in the thl Roadtrip App.
The toilet in your vehicle has a cartridge underneath that catches the waste. The cartridge requires a toilet chemical to break down the waste and keep it odour free. These toilet chemicals can be purchased from our branch. If you have purchased the Value Pack or Platinum Pack, you will have three toilet chemicals provided.
We recommend you empty the toilet cassette every 1 - 2 days (at an authorised dump point) and place a new chemical inside, along with some water after emptying. The toilet cassette is located in a lockable compartment outside the vehicle, adjacent to the bathroom. Under the toilet cassette are wells that collect any overflow of waste.
These wells are dry and clean when you collect your vehicle from our branch. They need to also be returned this way.
There are several steps you can take to avoid any overflow of waste into these wells.
- Always make sure the toilet shutter is fully open when you use your toilet. If it is not open the waste will seep around the cassette instead of going into the cassette. The waste will then end up in the wells underneath.
- Always ensure the toilet shutter is fully closed when not in use. Just the motion of driving can cause waste to spill over the top outlet. This spillage will end up in the wells below.
- After emptying the toilet cassette, ensure the cassette is pushed in all the way, and then adjusted back so it sits flush behind the plastic lip and locks in. If the cassette does not line up properly with the toilet shutter, waste will end up seeping around the cassette and underneath into the wells.
- Empty the toilet regularly. A full cassette will overflow through the top seals and seep around the cartridge and into the wells underneath.
- When you empty the toilet, check the wells underneath for any overflow. Wash and dry wells if there is any waste in them.
If the wells under the toilet cassette are full, you will get overflow of waste coming into the bathroom floor area. This can be quite unpleasant for the hirer and our branch staff on return of the vehicle.
If you do not maintain the toilet during your hire and either the wells or cassette are returned full, you will be asked to clean/empty them or be charged toilet cleaning fee.
If you would prefer that we empty the cassette for you on drop-off (selected branches), consider purchasing our Drop & Go Pack. With this Pack, we'll:
- take care of the 'end of hire' vehicle, cabin and bathroom cleaning (simply return the vehicle neat and tidy) and
- empty the toilet cassette and waste water tanks for you, if you are returning a camper with a toilet to Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney or any New Zealand location.
You can add this to your booking at any stage before drop-off. Just give us a call.
Yes, all 2WD campervans in Australia carry one spare tyre, and the tools to change it. 4WD campers feature two spare tyre.
In New Zealand all campers carry a spare tyre except for our European campers in the Britz fleet. The location of the toolkit is referenced in the show-through video for each campervan.
No. While the fresh water tank supplies water for showering, washing dishes, handwashing, and flushing the toilet, it is not classified as potable water and is not recommended for drinking. We recommend using bottled water or water from a known safe drinking water source for consumption and food preparation.
The Refuelling Pack may be added to your booking (at an additional cost) for a hassle-free end.
This includes:
- Return the fuel tank empty
- Return the gas bottle empty
- Road user charge recovery fee (New Zealand only)
If you purchase the Value Pack the fee is included.
If you have not purchased the Value Pack there is an additional charge of $4.00 per person per day (Maximum charge is $60 per extra driver).

Please note that a foreign currency fee may be charged by some banks (please check with your provider) at the time the debited bond is paid. This fee will not be refunded.
Vehicles must be returned in a reasonable state of cleanliness, completely free of mud, rubbish and pet hair.
If applicable, the toilet and waste water tank must both be returned empty or a $299 including GST cleaning fee will be charged to you in respect to each tank.
A cleaning fee up to $299 including GST will be charged if the vehicle is returned in an unreasonable state of cleanliness and/or should the vehicle need deodorising as a result of prohibited smoking.
A pet cleaning fee of $325 including GST will apply in relation to additional cleaning of the vehicle where you travel with pets during the rental period. This excludes service animals.
The cost of using New Zealand's roads is recovered from road users via levies in the price of some fuels or through road user charges (RUC). The Road User Charge Recovery Fee will be calculated and collected on return of the RV based on the kilometres travelled during the hire. The fee per 100km is as follows:
- 4 Berth and 6 Berth toilet & shower: $8.18
- All other vehicles: $8.04
We reserve the right to amend the Road User Charge Recovery Fee upon Government intervention without notice. For your convenience we do have an option where you can pre-pay this fee for an additional daily rate if you'd prefer.
As New Zealand is made up of two main islands, it will be necessary for you to book a ferry crossing if you are travelling from the North to South Island or vice versa. If you plan on travelling between the North and South Islands of New Zealand, you need to book a ferry directly with a local ferry operator. You will need to have the length of your camper handy to complete your booking. The cost of the ferry will depend on the length of your campervan or motorhome. We recommend that you book well ahead of your holiday, especially if you are travelling during the November to March summer season or over busy events.
On the day of travel, it's best to check-in to the Ferry Terminal around 60 minutes prior to departure when you're crossing with a campervan. It's super easy, all you have to do is drive on, enjoy the scenic cruise and then drive off. Ferry crossings take approximately three hours with several sailings each day.
On arrival at the check-in counter:
- Please ensure any pet is supervised by an adult outside the branch and restrained on a lead
- Please have all driver's licences for all drivers ready for our review (if your driver's licence is not in English, we require an accredited English translation or an International Driver's permit). The physical license must be presented, otherwise we cannot release the vehicle
- Please have a credit card ready for payment of any travel products or outstanding balances
- You can add any extra hire items that you may have missed during online check-in
- In NZ you will also be required to fill out this safe driving questionnaire before you leave the branch. This questionnaire is designed to help you familiarise yourself with New Zealand's road rules and means you'll be well-prepared to make the most of your roadtrip.
- A member of our crew will then take you to your camper. At this time:
- Our crew will talk you through the camper features and allow you time to familiarise yourself with them and their operation. Watching the camper show through video in advance is really helpful to understand your camper. You can also re-watch it at any time in the thl Roadtrip App
- Please check that all travel extra items that you purchased have been included and are present in the camper
- Check you have enough bedding and towels
- Ask our crew member if you have any questions or if you see anything that concerns you. We want to ensure you get on the road safely and with confidence. We find some guests need more time than others to pick up a camper, as there a few more things to run through than with a usual car hire. This may delay your departure, so please allow plenty of time for pick-up in your itinerary.
- Pack your belongings into the camper and hit the road!
- If you haven't downloaded the thl Roadtrip app- do it before you leave the branch
- We recommend not driving too far on your first day and to have a campsite booked at a holiday park to plug into power, fully charge your battery and settle into your camper on that first night.
Unfortunately, we do not have the option for early or late pick-ups after hours. If your flight arrives later than expected, we recommend you stay in a hotel nearby that night and come in when the branch opens the next morning (no refunds apply for late pick-ups). Please call us to let us know if you will be collecting your camper the next day, so we know to still expect you.
Campervans must be collected from and returned to the branch confirmed for your booking.
In New Zealand, our branches in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown are conveniently located near the airports, where we offer complimentary shuttle transfers to and from the branch.
The New Zealand Government has introduced a new travel requirement for some visitors and transit passengers. It's called the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) and travellers need to request theirs via the official mobile app or website. Approval can take up to 72 hours, so get yours before you go.
The NZeTA is required for travel from 1 October 2019.
Visit immigration.govt.nz/nzeta to find out if you need one.
Accident liability is the maximum dollar amount (cost) which the hirer is responsible to pay per accident. This includes damage to the rental vehicle and any third party property. The accident liability which applies depends upon the option selected by the hirer. Standard accident liability is included in the daily vehicle hire rate. For a reduced accident liability, the hirer may choose to purchase the High Road or the Value Pack. It is important to note that irrespective of the option selected, that liability is not limited in some cases which are excluded (noted in the rental agreement) or if the terms of the rental agreement are breached by the hirer and this causes or contributes to any damage.
If the High Road is not taken, the Liability Deposit is required upon the collection of your vehicle. Guests must provide a valid credit or debit card to pay the Liability Deposit and the amount will be debited to the guest's credit or debit card on the day of vehicle collection. The credit or debit card holder must be present and able to sign for the Liability Deposit upon vehicle collection.
The Liability Deposit is subject to a 1.9% debit card or 2.8% credit card administration fee in addition to the Liability Deposit amount when the card used is either a Visa or MasterCard, or 2.6% for American Express.
Please note that a foreign currency fee may be charged by some banks (please check with your provider) at the time the debited bond is paid. This fee will not be refunded.
The Liability Deposit is fully refundable, including the credit card surcharge, if the card used to provide the Liability Deposit is a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card, provided the Vehicle is returned without Damage. We recommend that you use a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card for the Liability Deposit, as the credit card surcharge that applies when using American Express is not refundable. The Liability Deposit is refundable provided the Vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, undamaged, in a clean condition and with full fuel tanks (fuel being petrol or diesel) and gas bottle.
A foreign currency fee may be charged by some banks (please check with your provider) at the time the debited bond is paid. This fee is non refundable.
By purchasing the High Road or the Value Pack (which includes the High Road) the guest can reduce their liability to Nil for 2WD vehicles or $500 per accident for 4WD vehicles. It is important to note that irrespective of the option selected, that liability is not limited in some cases which are excluded (noted in the rental agreement) or if the terms of the rental agreement are breached by the hirer and this causes or contributes to any damage.

Guests who travel to restricted areas without permission may void the liability option in the event of damage or accident
We greatly value your safety and patronage. For this reason we want to ensure all customers renting a 4WD are fully aware of key safety considerations.
The following points are vital to your safety:
- Always drive within your capability
- Do not make travel times and distances too excessive
- Do not drive at night
- Adjust gear range and tyre pressure to suit conditions
- Observe safety information stickers in vehicle
- If you are tired, take a break
- Be aware of changing road conditions and road closures
- Stay on the tracks and report remote travel plans to an official or the nearest police station
- EPIRB/PLB should be carried with you when leaving the vehicle
- It’s advisable to carry 3–4lt of drinking water per person per day
- Carrying a satellite phone is strongly advised (available for hire from the branch)
We specifically remind you of your responsibilities under the Exclusions clause of your Rental Agreement, this clause informs you when (irrespective of liability option taken) you will NOT be covered.
We value your wellbeing, and for safety purposes, we reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to:
- adverse road or weather conditions;
- the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the hire period; and
- any concerns we, our employees or agents may have regarding driver experience or ability.
We will advise you on pick-up of any travel restrictions known at that time.
You must drive within the posted speed limits and to the conditions. The maximum speed limit in Australia is 110km. Vehicles must not exceed this speed limit.
In New Zealand, the maximum speed limit for our campers is either 90km/h or 100km/h depending on the model hired. There is a sticker on the windscreen advising the maximum speed allowed. Vehicles must not exceed this speed limit.
Unfortunately most portable cots do not fit in our vehicles. We recommend children sleep in the lower dinette-converted beds. Our vehicles are not fitted with child safety barriers for top bunk / overhead beds.
Drivers must be 21 years of age or over. However, if the rented vehicle is a Mighty Highball, Mighty Double Down, Cheapa Hitop, Cheapa Endeavour, Hippie Hitop or Hippie Endeavour, then drivers must be 18 years of age or over with a full and current driver's licence.
There is no maximum age as long as you have a valid driver's licence.

The maximum speed you can drive with snow chains on is 20km/hr.
After driving 50 metres you will need to check your snow chains are still fitted correctly. If the snow chains are ok, continue to drive at a maximum of 20km/hr. If they are not ok, re-adjust the snow chains or contact On-Road Assist on 0800 788 558 or +64 9 801 3857.
You should not use your snow chains on any sealed or gravel roads that are not covered in snow or ice. As soon as there is no snow on the road, the snow chains must be removed to prevent damaging the tyre.
Please call the 0800 number provided on your key ring and our friendly on road team will assist you. Alternatively there are videos in the thl Roadtrip App on how to fit Quick Fit Chains and how to fit Ladder Chains.
Damage costs start from NZ$150 for the replacement of damaged snow chains and NZ$600 per damaged wheel arch.
Snow Chains are available for hire for an additional fee. If you purchase the Value Pack for maui, Apollo, Britz, Mighty, Cheapa Campa or Hippie, they are included in your hire and will be stored in the external storage locker.
You can call 0800 4 Highways (0800 444449) or check online at www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic
You will likely encounter toll roads if you are driving in the North Island. A toll is charged each time the road is used.
When driving a thl rental vehicle in New Zealand you are responsible for paying toll fees, so it is important to be aware of these roads and how to pay your toll (eg. online or via a toll kiosk) before you travel.
Your Branch Host can help you purchase a toll pass. Should thl receive a notice about an unpaid toll, the toll charge and an administration fee per toll will be passed on to you. Click here for more information, including toll road locations.
You will likely encounter toll roads if you are driving through Metropolitan New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.
When driving a thl rental vehicle in Australia, you are responsible for the costs of the toll charges, so it is important to be aware of these roads before you travel. These toll roads are electronically tolled, which means you will not be able to stop and pay cash.
However, our campers are registered for automatic tolling, which means you don’t need to do a thing. If you drive on a toll road, the toll charge will be paid by thl and thl will then charge the credit card that is on file for your booking for the toll charge, along with an administration fee per toll.
thl will send you an email confirming the cost of the toll and the time and date when you travelled on any toll road. Click here for more information, including a map of toll road locations.

We encourage you to download the thl Roadtrip App for a show-through of your camper. The App also features CamperHelp 'how to' videos, showing you how to use the features of your camper.
All campervans are insured for damage and for damage to the property of a Third Party. The Low Road liability option is included as standard, but a liability deposit applies. Visit the Terms and Conditions page on the website for more information.

Minimum and maximum rental periods apply and are subject to change, please contact our Bookings Hosts for more information.
Goods and Services tax (GST) is included in the daily gross rental rate of your vehicle hire.
Campervan rates (rental days) are calculated on a calendar day basis.
The first and last day of your rental, irrespective of the times of collection and return, are calculated as rental days.
There is no refund available for late pick-up or early return of the vehicle.
Yes, unlimited kilometres are included in your rental.
Unlimited kilometres are included in 2WD vehicle rentals.
Our 4WD rates include 300 kilometres per day, however, should a little more adventure be needed, a 500km package is available for $250. If the distance travelled is a little longer, any excess kilometres will be charged at 0.55 cents per kilometre, payable when you drop off the 4WD.
Provided the campervan you have rented is fully self-contained (meaning it has built-in toilet facilities and fresh water/grey water tanks on board) you are allowed to 'freedom camp' in designated sites. Please obey local signage and regulations and ask at local information centres [look for blue i-SITE signs or visitor information signs in each town] for suitable places to stay. Please do be aware that you may be fined for 'freedom camping' in non-designated areas.
To fully charge your campervan's auxiliary [house] battery you will need to plug the vehicle into 240V mains power regularly. We recommend you stay in holidays parks to charge the battery at a minimum every second night. Your camper may not be fully charged on pick-up so we do recommend you book your first night in a Holiday Park or campground to give you the opportunity to fully charge your camper.
We recommend downloading the thl Roadtrip app for android or iPhone - you'll get up to date information on where to stay, places of interest on the road, as well as helpful locations such as public bathrooms, dump stations & supermarkets.
If you plan on freedom camping, your camper needs to be Certified Self Contained. How long you freedom camp depends on what facilities you wish to use in your campervan. The more equipment you use the quicker you will use the available charge on your house battery. To prolong your freedom camping experience, try to keep the fridge closed as much as possible. A good tip is to keep the fridge filled, even by using recycled bottles filled with water, and turning the fridge to a lower setting. Parking the vehicle in the shade can also reduce power consumption.
We recommend plugging in and recharging your house battery every second night at a powered site to maintain the lights, fridge and water pump.
Campsites offer facilities to empty your waste water and toilet cassette, and many also offer laundry facilities to refresh your towels and sheets.

If you are travelling during peak periods such as school holidays, public holidays and long weekends, it is best to book your campground in advance to avoid disappointment. You can search for and book campsites and holiday parks through the thl Roadtrip App.
