What to Expect at Pickup

Whether you’re picking up your maui campervan in Australia or New Zealand, we’re here to make your journey smooth from the very first step. Here’s everything you need to know for a seamless pickup, with key differences between the two countries clearly highlighted.

Before You Arrive

  • Complete Online Check-In
    All guests must complete online check in before pickup (ideally 30 days in advance). This ensures we have the right information for all drivers and helps speed up your experience.
  • Review Your Rental Agreement
    Please read your terms and conditions before arrival.
  • Download the thl Roadtrip App
    Get the thl Roadtrip App from the App Store or Play Store for show-through videos, tips, and more.
  • Bring Your Driver’s Licence
    You must present your physical driver’s licence. If it’s not in English, bring an accredited English translation or International Driver’s Permit as well.

Getting to the Branch

If you fly in, book a hotel near your pickup branch for the night before. If you arrive on the same day as your flight, drive less and stay at a nearby campground or holiday park.

Australia

  • No guest parking at branches. Please arrange your own transport (public transport, taxi, or rideshare).
  • Branch hours may vary – Check before arrival

New Zealand

  • No guest parking, but safe and affordable options are nearby (try Parkopedia).
  • Branches in Auckland, Christchurch, and Queenstown are near airports and offer shuttle transfers.
  • Check branch hours vary so best to check before arrival

At the Branch & Collecting Your Camper

  • Head to the check-in counter with your driver’s licence and credit card.
  • Add any extra hire items to your booking if needed.
  • Our crew will show you to your camper and answer any questions.
  • Watch show-through and how-to videos in the thl Roadtrip App for guidance on using your camper’s features.
  • Allow plenty of time for pickup – it can take longer than a standard car hire.

New Zealand Only:
You’ll need to complete a complete the drive safe questionnaire to familiarise yourself with local road rules.

Hitting the Road

  • First Night: Plug into 240V mains power (if your vehicle supports it) to fully charge your camper battery.
  • Stay Connected: Purchase a local SIM or eSIM for local calls and On Road Assist.
  • Stock Up: Visit a local supermarket for groceries, road trip treats and bottled drinking water. 
  • Fresh Water: The fresh water tank provides water for all your daily camping essentials, including showers, washing up and flushing the toilet. While the water is generally fine for these uses, it is not considered drinking water, and we recommend using bottled or freshly sourced potable water for drinking, food preparation and brushing teeth.
  • Know the Rules: Be familiar with local road rules and safe driving recommendations.

Campsite Booking

  • Australia:
     Strongly recommended to pre-book all campsites for your trip, especially during peak season, to guarantee a spot and access amenities.
  • New Zealand:
     Book a campsite at a holiday park for your first night to plug in, recharge, and settle in.
