Arnhem Way

Starting at Katherine, Arnhem Way takes you on a four-wheel drive of mostly gravel with several river crossings to Nhulunbuy on Gove Peninsula.

Day 1: Katherine to Mainoru Store

Travel: 250km

Begin your journey in Katherine where the outback and tropics meet to create an adventure-filled destination. Break your journey at the friendly communities of Barunga or Beswick where you can purchase local arts and crafts.

After a four hour drive, you’ll reach Mainoru Store where you can stop overnight.

Day 2: Mainoru Store to Nhulunbuy (Gove)

Travel: 480km

Journey on along the Central Arnhem Road and stop off at Yirrkala and visit the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre. Be sure to check out the beautiful and authentic Indigenous art. When you arrive in Nhulunbuy reward yourself with a drink at the Gove Boat Club and enjoy the famous Top End sunset.

Day 3: Nhulunbuy to Dhimurru Recreation Areas

Travel: 65km

From Nhulunbuy uncover iconic landscapes at any of the Dhimurru Recreation Areas just 1 to 2 hours from Nhulunbuy. You’ll find a range of sandy white beaches, rugged coastlines, open forests or shady inland waterways. Bring a packed lunch and head to one of the amazing picnic areas.

Day 4: Nhulunbuy to Bremer Island

Travel: 10km

Take a leisurely 1 hour boat ride or 10 minute charter flight to Bremer Island and arrive at Banubanu Eco Wilderness Resort which showcases the ultimate Northern Territory paradise. Relax, unwind and reenergise on this island paradise and take in guided walks, spearfishing, turtle watching or bask in the island sun.

Day 5: Bremer Island to Nhulunbuy

Travel: 10km

Stay an extra day and jump right into a bluewater fishing experience on one of the many charters available or take a scenic flight to discover a whole new perspective of Arnhem Land.

Day 6-7: Nhulunbuy to Katherine

Travel: 730km

Hop back onto the Central Arnhem Road and enjoy lovely natural landscapes as you make your way back to Katherine. Stop by Giddy River and have a picnic or take a dip in the Katherine Hot Springs only a short 5 minute drive from town.
