Explorer's Way - Adelaide to Darwin

Follow the trail blazed in the 1860s for the Overland Telegraph and drive past striking natural attractions, historic outback pubs and towns brimming with culture and activity. Named after John McDouall Stuart, the first explorer to successfully cross Australia from south to north and return, the Explorers Way extends from Adelaide to Darwin. On your travels you’ll hit the Territory’s star attractions, including World Heritage-listed Uluru and Kata Tjuta, spectacular Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park), and the waterfalls and waterholes of Litchfield National Park.

Highlights

Uluru

Visit one of the greatest natural wonders of the world, Uluru. Not only is it a spectacular natural formation, Uluru is a deeply spiritual place. You can feel a powerful presence the moment you set eyes on it.

At 348 metres high, Uluru is one of the world’s largest monoliths, towering over the surrounding landscape and some 550 million years old.

Kakadu National Park

In Australia’s biggest national park you will find ancient landscapes with thundering waterfalls, lush rainforests, wandering wetlands, exotic wildlife and ancient rock art.

Covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres, Kakadu National Park is a World Heritage listing renowned for both its cultural and natural values.

Crocodiles

Saltwater crocs, the most famous of the Territory's creatures, can be seen in rivers and billabongs in the Top End or at wildlife parks around NT.

Terrifying, ancient, and resilient – crocodiles are among the most fascinating animals in the Northern Territory. See them in the wild or leaping for bait on a river cruise, come face-to-face with one through a glass-bottomed tank at a wildlife park or watch feeding time at a crocodile farm.

Indigenous Culture

The continent’s first inhabitants arrived some 65,000 years ago and over the millennia created a rich tapestry of languages and customs that vary from region to region.

From the Arrernte in Central Australia and the Yolngu in Arnhem Land to the Tiwi people of the Tiwi Islands near the Timor Sea, over 40 different indigenous language groups reside in the NT.

Ideal Vehicle - Motorhome

Motorhomes are perfect for the Adelaide to Darwin route. Motorhomes are larger and more comfortable over the long highway stretches and the additional toilet and shower means that you can stop between towns which are often spread far apart. The northern territory has two distinct climates, hot, and hot and wet, motorhomes will keep you comfortable in both.
