The Gold Coast
The Gold Coast is blessed with more than 60km of world class beaches, and for that reason it has received glowing praise from visitors and tourist operators alike. Because of the vast stretch of ocean off the east coast of Australia the beaches are unprotected from storms and wild weather which sometimes rages across the coastline in the form of cyclones which come during the summer months. Luckily the beaches are patrolled by professional lifeguards all year round and during summer these numbers are beefed up by the volunteer surf lifesavers.
It is one of the best places on earth to explore from the comfort of a Campervan Rentals vehicles.
Every morning the lifesavers check conditions on the beach and setup a set of flags to indicate the safest part of the beach to swim on. To avoid trouble we strongly advise you to always swim between the flags. If you stay between the flags you'll be under the watchful eye of a Gold Coast lifesaver, and we believe Gold Coast lifesavers are the best in the world. For safety reasons surfboard riders are not welcome between the flags.
Before you leave the comfort of your campervan hire vehicle for the beach, you should know which beaches we believe are the best to visit. We hope you find these recommendations useful.
Best family beaches
Rainbow Bay/Greenmount in Coolangatta
Rainbow bay beach is a popular swimming beach for families and children as it is protected by a sheltered cove, and is patrolled during peak seasons. It is a relaxed and welcoming suburb with a wide range of things to do, the whole family sure to find something of interest.
Currumbin Beach/Estuary
The views from Currumbin are impressive in all directions but families enjoy this beach for the gentle surf and rock pools located at either end of the beach. Currumbin Beach is well known for its clean, patrolled beaches. While Currumbin is a short drive away from the heart of the Gold Coast we believe it is worth making the effort. There is ample parking on the foreshore so you can leave your campervan rental in the carpark while you enjoy a day at the beach.
The Broadwater (inside the shark nets)
Located on the northern end of the Gold Coast the Broadwater is protected from the open ocean by The Spit to the south and South Stradbroke Island to the north. A promenade snakes its way along the shore and is popular with people of all ages. A large children's play area is located at the Southport end and will keep the kids busy for hours. A popular campsite is located beside the Broadwater parklands and provides a convenient base camp location for campervan hire Australia holiday makers.
Best Surf Beaches
Snapper Rocks
Snapper used to be suitable for beginners. But since the Tweed river sand bypass project, and the formation of what is known as the 'superbank', Snapper has the world's longest waves and when conditions are right, you can surf for up to 1.5km. Snapper is very territorial and very crowded meaning you should be aware of local etiquette before attempting to surf side by side with the locals. Snapper Rocks is also home to the annual Quiksilver Pro (the first event on the Association of surfing professionals world tour) and has become one of the most popular events on the world surfing circuit. Of course spectators are always welcome so dont' be shy about heading over in your campervan rental vehicle to check out the local talent.
Duranbah
The beach itself isn't anything to rave about, but the swells are the main attraction. To reach the riders one must paddle a fair way out, but that leaves plenty of space for body boards and shorties to each take their faire share.
Kirra
This surfing hotspot will challenge the experienced surfer, but will also cater to beginners who stick closer to shore. The beach has great wave shapes which come fast and sharp. This is a popular beach with local surfers and can be crowded during peak seasons. We recommend parking your campervan hire vehicle on the foreshore when you visit the beach so that you can quickly and easily access any of the facilities you require.
Currumbin Alley
This area is renowned for its point break that produces an easy right-hander off Currumbin Rocks, a favourite with long boarders, paddlers and learners. The waves are easily accessed from the beach requiring only a short paddle.
Burleigh Heads
Burleigh Heads has got something for everyone. The beach itself is immaculately clean and provides a protected, patrolled swimming area, a great point break and a well equipped foreshore. With ample free parking close to the beach it draws crowds during peak seasons. It also hosts a major international surfboard riding tournament.
